Lucea, the capital of Hanover, is that picturesque town which sits comfortably between two of Jamaica’s most vibrant tourism zones, Negril and Montego Bay;
The town, which has a population of 30,000, serves as the hub of business and entertainment activity for the residents of nearby satellite communities. Collectively, Lucea and the surrounding communities have a combined total population of well over 80,000;
The town boasts arguably, the most beautiful natural harbour in Jamaica (some say the region);
In the past the local business community has been unable to position itself to take full advantage of the lucrative tourist traffic. Significantly, tourist traffic in this regard refers not exclusively to visitors from overseas, but the very important local visitors from outside the immediate community as well as the Diaspora. The completion of the a new four star hotel The Grand Palladium Resort and Spa with over 1,000 rooms which is within close proximity to the town of Lucea has created an exceptional and unique environment suitable for the marketing and viable incorporation of big business and tourism interests into this proposed event which will be the first of it’s kind at this standard in this region.
The Lucea Cross the Harbour Swim and Regatta presents an exceptional opportunity to merge sports, culture, and entertainment towards the development of a viable annual Sports Tourism product in Western Jamaica
Along with an exciting array of sports-based activities, an entertainment package featuring attractive offerings of Jamaican culture and high caliber entertainment acts will be featured.
The swim meet has always had the potential to develop into one of Jamaica’s premier tourism and community events, but was previously lacking national exposure and proper marketing.
Past meetings of Caribbean stakeholders in tourism have warned against the over dependence on the traditional sun, sea and sand brand of tourism and highlighted the need for diversification of the tourism product into areas such as sports, culture, and health tourism (Caribbean Tourism Organization, Conference, October 2008, Bahamas: “Re-inventing Caribbean Tourism”);
